'Do not treat the other like you want to be treated yourself'
Validity of the ethic of reciprocity
The ethic of reciprocity, valid in many cultures and religions ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’, is often unsuitable for intercultural mediation. This ethic is not sensitive to differences of situation and values. Different people generally have different needs. If mediation participants acknowledge these differences, all can be happy at the end. So ‘do not treat the other like you want to be treated yourself’ is the #1 rule for intercultural conflict resolution.*
