Mediation is a process in which conflicting parties engage the assistance of an 'all-partial'* mediator who has no authority or aim to make any decisions for the mediating parties. The mediation participants are bound by confidentiality. The mediator uses certain skills to help them resolve the dispute with focus on the real interests of the participants.

In addition, the mediator facilitates empowerment of the parties at the level of communication, prevention of conflicts, awareness, and growth.

Impartiality or All-partiality

The term 'all-partiality' is preferred in this context, as 'mediator impartiality' can create a kind of detachment that might inhibit the openness of the participants. An 'all-partial' mediator considers herself or himself to be equally on the sides of all parties.
